Microsoft shuts retail chain lower, takes $450M charge

Microsoft on Fri said it would close up its chain of shop and have a $450 million cost against earnings to take into account the permanent shutterings.The stores – Microsoft had 82 globally, all but 10 of these situated in the U.S. – have already been padlocked since mid-March, once the Redmond, Wash. business closed them due to the coronavirus pandemic. Not one got reopened before Microsoft slid them in to the “really dead” class.

4 outlets – among the NEW YORK stores, those in Sydney and London, and an on-campus place in Redmond – will undoubtedly be repurposed as “Microsoft Encounter Centers” where items will presumably be proven or even sold, highlighted or even hawked.
